{"id":6971,"date":"2012-10-21T14:00:18","date_gmt":"2012-10-21T04:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nickin.space\/?p=6971"},"modified":"2018-03-10T15:58:51","modified_gmt":"2018-03-10T05:58:51","slug":"dvd-shelves-assembly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nick.garagespaceship.com\/index.php\/dvd-shelves-assembly\/","title":{"rendered":"DVD SHELVES &#8211; ASSEMBLY"},"content":{"rendered":"<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-6971\" data-postid=\"6971\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-6971 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n                    <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_row themify_builder_row tb_o1or798 tb_first tf_w\">\n                        <div class=\"row_inner col_align_top tb_col_count_1 tf_box tf_rel\">\n                        <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column tb-column col-full tb_omh4998 first\">\n                    <!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_bnyp800  repeat \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n        <section class=\\\"entry fix\\\"><p>Welcome to my fourth post in the building DVD Shelves Blog.<\/p><p>By now you will have cut all of he materials and are excited about getting to the interesting part of the project where you start to see your DVD shelves come to life!<\/p><p>This is a simple guide to the steps I took to assemble my DVD Shelves and any tips I might have along the way.\u00a0 So lets get started!<\/p><p>The first thing you will want to do is assemble the riser box which site under the shelves.\u00a0 Once assembled you can also glue and screw it to the bottom site of the bottom shelf of the DVD Shelves.<\/p><p>Next put together the shelves and uprights \u2013 WITHOUT GLUING THEM.<br \/> <img class=\\\"size-full wp-image-6822 alignleft\\\" src=\\\"https:\/\/nickin.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Freestanding256.png\\\" alt=\\\"\\\" width=\\\"256\\\" height=\\\"256\\\" \/>This is an easy way to get the correct spacing for the uprights when you glue and screw them to the bottom shelf, and then the top shelf.\u00a0 If you have pretty tight tolerance on your slots in the shelves an uprights then the the whole assemble with stand up by itself.<\/p><p>&lt;== To the left is a picture of my DVD Shelves freestanding, not yet glued or screwed.<\/p><p>Next screw on the bottom shelf (which should already have the riser box attached) and then screw on the top shelf. (image to the left)<br \/> <img class=\\\"size-full wp-image-6823 alignright\\\" src=\\\"https:\/\/nickin.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FreestandinTtopandBottom256.png\\\" alt=\\\"\\\" width=\\\"256\\\" height=\\\"256\\\" \/>Once you have screwed on the top and bottom shelves, it is time to remove each shelf (best done one at a time), apply glue and reinsert the shelf.<br \/> Since you can\u2019t really screw the shelves to the uprights I recommend using a good wood glue that will do the job for a long time to come!<\/p><p>Next attach the side uprights.<\/p><p>Next we attach the shelf backs.\u00a0 These serve two purposes.\u00a0 1. the stop the DVDs from falling of the back of th shelf and keep them aligned at th front. and 2.\u00a0 the help to sure up the structure of the DVD shelves, forming a major part of the structural integrity of the DVD Shelves.<\/p><p><img class=\\\"size-full wp-image-6826 alignleft\\\" src=\\\"https:\/\/nickin.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ShelfBacks256.png\\\" alt=\\\"\\\" width=\\\"256\\\" height=\\\"256\\\" \/>Each backing strip should sit 15mm below the top of the shelf and 60 above the shelf.\u00a0 This gives you a way to glue and nail each piece to the shelves and the uprights and makes sure they don\u2019t come lose with time.<\/p><p>The idea is that the Shelf back form a nice back for the shelves, while leaving the back of the shelf open.\u00a0 Leaving the shelf open doesn\u2019t make the whole structure seem very large and imposing against the wall.<\/p><p>Now the DVD Shelves are starting to look nearly finished\u2026 BUT\u2026<\/p><p>BORING WORK ALERT!\u2026\u00a0 Once assembled, you will still have some gaps where the shelves meet the uprights \u2013 depending on how well you cut the slots.\u00a0 There may also be gaps at the front of the book case on each of the upright where they meets the shelves.\u00a0 Since we are going for a box look we need to make sure that when we paint the shelves there are no gaps.<\/p><p>I used a filler and went along every gap on the entire DVD Shelf and filled them.\u00a0 Yes! the whole DVD Shelf!\u2026<\/p><p><em>Tip: I didn\u2019t worry about the back!<\/em><\/p><p>Once I have filled all of the gaps, I let the filler dry and then sanded the WHOLE DVD Shelf!<br \/> Even though the MDF has a nice smooth surface, I made sure that I sanded all of the shelves and all of the uprights so that there wasn\u2019t any surfaces that my paint wouldn\u2019t stick to or end up uneven on.<\/p><p>Finally I painted the shelves.\u00a0 I gave my shelved two coats.\u00a0 I used a semi-gloss black, but you can paint yours any color you like,\u00a0 If you have a very white house you may choose to paint yours a gloss white for instance.<\/p><p>So How did my shelves finish up?\u2026 sorry , you will have to wait until my next post to find out!\u2026<\/p><p>Happy Sanding!<\/p><\/section>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to my fourth post in the building DVD Shelves Blog.
